The General Elections

New Jersey General Election 2022

The General Election is an election by the general population to decide who will serve in various public offices. The candidates that appear on the ballot were chosen by their political parties in the Primary Election on June 7th, 2022. This year, voters will choose who will serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. The House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws.

Tuesday, November 8th, 2022. General Elections are always held on the first Tuesday in November that falls after the first Monday in November.

You can vote in the General Election if you registered to vote. The deadline to register to vote in the 2022 General Election is Tuesday, October 18th, 2022. You can register to vote in U.S. federal, state, and local elections if you:

  • Are a U.S. citizen (Some areas allow non-citizens to vote in local elections only.)
  • Meet your state’s residency requirements (You can be homeless and still meet these requirements.)
  • Are 18 years old on or before Election Day (November 8th, 2022)
  • Have a developmental or intellectual disability. You have the right to vote even if you live in a developmental center, group home, or someplace where you receive residential care. You may have the right to vote even if you have a guardian depending on the terms of the guardianship.

Check the voter information portal to make sure you are registered to vote and find your polling place.

You can vote by mail, in person early voting, or at your polling place on Election Day. Check the state website for instructions to vote in general elections here: https://nj.gov/state/elections/election-information-2022.shtml

If you want to vote by mail, you must apply to your county elections office to get your mail-in ballot. If you would like to get it by mail, you must apply by November 1st, 2022. If you would like to pick it up in person, you must pick it up from your county clerk by 3:00 pm the day before the election (November 7th, 2022). You must return your ballot by 8:00 pm on Election Day (November 8th, 2022) to your county Board of Elections in person or deposit it in one of your county’s secure authorized drop boxes. If you’d like to mail your ballot, it must be postmarked on or before 8:00 pm on Election Day (November 8th, 2022).
