Helping Hands

“Everybody has a gift!”

Established in the 1980s, Helping Hands is one of the longest-running self-advocacy groups in New Jersey. Monthly meetings are led by—and open to—people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who want to have a voice in their communities.

Members of Helping Hands support one another in self-advocacy in their everyday lives. They also focus on state and national issues, advocating for policies that empower them to live productive lives and be fully integrated into and included in the community.

Activities include

  • Guest speakers
  • Self-determination training
  • Empowering conversations in which experiences and challenges related to self-advocacy are shared
  • Advocacy campaigns on issues affecting people with IDD, such as Medicaid funding cuts and other SSI-related issues
  • Attendance at state and national advocacy conferences
  • Get-out-the-vote campaigns

Helping Hands meets at the CAU main office on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A light meal is provided.

Join us! We welcome people outside of CAU who share our mission: “Everybody has a gift!”

First Tuesday of every month except August
