Volunteer Opportunities with Community Access

Community Access is a non-profit, social service agency located in Elizabeth, NJ providing support services to teens, adults and families throughout the Union County area. We believe that volunteerism and student internship help us to further improve the quality of services that we provide to people in need.

Volunteering and student internships are a great way to build your resume, develop job-related skills, and build bridges for future employment during school and/or after graduation.

The following provides a brief overview of volunteer opportunities at Community Access. All volunteers and student interns will receive valuable and comprehensive training to perform duties. Guidance from trained professionals and regular supervision will be a provided to all participants.

General Opportunities

Car Donation Program: Wanted: Used vehicles in good cosmetic and running condition. Unlike many car donation programs, CAU does not involve any intermediary in the contribution process. The gift goes 100% to deserving youth who are transitioning out of CAU programs or a person with a disability.

Child Care: Babysit for parents while they enjoy an evening out.

Child's Play: Take a child out for the afternoon, perhaps to lunch and a park. Besides being beneficial to the child, this gives much-needed respite to the parents, usually single moms.

Clerical Helper: Light clerical work (filing, typing, photocopying)

Computers: Teach people with developmental disabilities how to operate a computer.

Holiday Projects: Make Holiday backpacks or baskets for CAU youth ages 13-21: clothing gift certificates, music gift certificates, cologne, perfume, etc.

Donations Needed: NEW household items such as bed linens, towels, kitchen utensils, dishes, glasses, small appliances – anything for someone moving into their own apartment for the first time. These donations will be put into a “Hope Chest” for disadvantaged youth and people with developmental disabilities who are transitioning out of CAU support.

Back to School Project: Make Back-to-School backpacks for kids ages 6-12: backpacks, notebooks, rulers, pens and pencils, erasers, crayons, etc.

Developing a walk team. Instruction and support are provided by CAU staff.

Mentoring Youth: Work cooperatively with program counselors to provide independent living skills training to teenagers (16-21 yr. old) in the Transitional Opportunities and Transitional Skills Programs. Some basic filing. Candidate should be patient and open-minded and be able to promote positive message to urban youth.

Union County Home Share Program: Assist in marketing and promoting this housing service through the distribution of flyers and brochures to community centers and public places throughout the county. Also assist with interviewing applicants and maintaining case files.

Human Resource Intern: Review current job descriptions against current organizational chart. Revise existing descriptions and create new descriptions for new positions to keep file current.

Quality of Life Committee Member: Assist people with disabilities to achieve personal goals and community integration through one on one and group activities. These services will be provided within our Supervised Apartment Program and Supportive Living Apartment Program.

Inclusive Ministries Coordinator: Be s faith companion to an adult with disability at your house of worship on weekends and holidays. Assist him/her to make personal connections with their religious community.

Parent Enrichment Project: Assist young children with homework assignments, art and crafts activities, planning birthday and holiday parties, help with clothing, food and toy drives. Most hours are during the week in the evening.

Educational Classes: Work with Recreation Coordinator to plan and instruct educational classes for adults with disabilities. Classes will be coordinated with a trained counselor and the curriculum will focus on the skills, abilities and interests of the targeted audience.

Recreational Activities: Work with our Recreation Coordinator to plan and participate in social and recreational activities for adults with developmental disabilities.

Special Events: Assist our agency Fund-Raising Coordinator in organizing agency special events. Events to select from include:

  • Annual Golf Outing
  • Walk-a-Thon
  • Gala Dinner Dance

Volunteers will work with a committee to promote and advertise event, secure participation and enhance sponsorship through marketing efforts.

Administrative Assistant: Assist with data entry, database updates, statistical summaries, organizing and scheduling statewide workshops for people with disabilities and their personal assistants.
